HOW TO: SET BOUNDARIES

November 1, 2023

Q: People always tell me to set boundaries, and I want to, but how do I actually do that?

A: One time I got my tarot cards read at a bachelorette party (fun idea right). Regardless of if you believe in that sort of thing, she gave me some really good advice. She said, “to set a boundary, you have to respect your own boundary.” I really had no clue what she meant but I nodded my head like I totally understood. I continued to think about this for months until it clicked.

A boundary only exists when you set a rule for yourself. It’s not a line that someone else isn’t allowed to cross. A boundary is a box that surrounds you, determining what you will allow in or not. If I say “I don’t work on the weekend” but then I respond to the email that came in, or pick up the phone when a client calls on Sunday morning, then I haven’t shown myself enough respect to implement my own boundary, and follow through. You can’t expect the world to follow your rule if you don’t even follow your rule. The work, the client, the spouse, the parent, the friend, doesn’t adhere to your boundary unless YOU do.
