BURNOUT IS A LEGIT MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS
Q: I am exhausted, stressed, and I hate my job. I am totally burnt out, and I don’t know how to fix it.
A: Burnout is sweeping through the nation and getting the best of us. Literally, it is stripping us of our best qualities and personality traits. Mayo Clinic defines burnout as a state of emotional or physical exhaustion that involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity. So if that’s your problem, let’s talk about the solution.
I have breaking news. The answer is not to do less—it’s to do more.
Burnout stems from a lack of efficacy. You are doing so much already and not feeling satisfied because you are doing the wrong thing. So, like I said, the answer is to do more—of what you love, of what brings you peace, of what fills your cup.
When I start to feel overwhelmed or distressed, I get up and take my vitamins. I book a yoga class. I make sure I do my skincare routine that night. I make the effort to call someone I love. I go outside and play fetch with my dogs.
Pick your potion. Do one thing or five things that ground you and make you feel like your best self. If you are feeling overworked, out of control, cynical, pessimistic, and overall just miserable, this is your sign to go do something that makes you feel good.
