STOP SAYING “I FEEL BAD” START SAYING “I APPRECIATE YOU”

July 1, 2023

Q: Dear @life.coach.lawyer, I just started working in Big Law and I am working really long hours. I feel really bad for my boyfriend and my dog because I am so busy.

What can I do?

A: Sometimes the worst part about our stress isn’t how difficult the actual task is, sometimes the worst part is how guilty we feel for the long nights, forgotten texts, fashionably late arrivals, and angry outbursts. If the first thing you do when you get on the phone, finally see a friend, or kiss your wife, is say “I’m so sorry…I feel bad…” Stop.

Stop saying that. You are compounding the negativity.

Interrupt the negative thought that the other person may being having, the ones you may have caused and take the opportunity to insert gratitude and positive thinking. Think about it. If the tables were turned and you were waiting for lunch and your friend was running late, if when they showed up and they said. “Thank you SO much for waiting, I am so grateful for you. You are the best.” Wouldn’t that be nice…? YES, it would be.

So, be THAT person. Be the kind of person that shows up and sprinkles in some positive energy, some good vibes.
